Announcing auditions for THE VIOLET HOUR
by Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg
Red Octopus Theatre Company and director Cody Larsen announce open auditions for their upcoming production of Richard Greenberg’s “The Violet Hour” on Saturday September 22nd, 2018 in the Studio Theater at the Newport Performing Arts Center – 777 W Olive Street, Newport. One female and three male actors are sought.
About the play: John, a fledgling World War I-era publisher, struggles to choose his imprint's first title. He has two manuscripts but lacks the funds to publish both. His difficult decision – whether to publish his lover's memoir or the novel written by his best friend – is further complicated by the arrival of a mysterious machine… a machine that produces pages predicting the future of the play's protagonists, affecting their lives and relationships in haunting and unexpected ways. Written by the Tony Award-winning playwright of Take Me Out, The Violet Hour is a brilliant, whimsical play – as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.
About the production: Rehearsals begin mid-December, 2018 - break for the holidays - then resume mid-January, 2019. Performances run March 1-17, 2019 (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and one Thursday performance March 14th) at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Auditions on Saturday, September 22 are open to the. Those auditioning should be prepared to read from the script. (Audition sides available at www.OctopusOnStage.com.) John Pace Seavering (M, mid-twenties): Recent college graduate, trying to start his own publishing company without his father's money. He has just enough money to publish one book and set his company on the right path. He wants to do good in the world.
Denis “Denny” McCleary (M, mid-twenties): John's best friend from college, the starving artist type. He has written his magnus opus, its the only book necessary (it does after all, take up several crates) and he wants John to publish it to prove to the father of his girlfriend that he is worth something. This is his only chance at happiness. Download audition sides for Denny.
Rosamund Plinth (F, early to mid-twenties): A socialite, Denny's would-be fiancée. Her (very) wealthy father intends her to marry a (very) wealthy young man but she has her heart set on Denny, if he can prove that something will come of him.
Gidger (M, ageless): John's secretary, feeling wholly unappreciated in his own right. The first to discover the machine and the first to realize what is really going on.
Also featuring Karlia Bertness as Jessie Brewster: a strong-willed Jazz singer who takes no guff and isn't afraid to shy away from the truth. She is John's mistress and she has written her autobiography that she wants him to publish.
